at least 10 people in this photo are hugging

phish at the asheville civic center last night was a great time. extreme amount of energy put forth by the band and the crowd was full and fired up. the light show was like nothing i've ever seen, completely dialed in. they ran out of beer before the second set. the male to female ratio had to be 20-1. there were tons of uniformed cops everywhere in the streets and throughout the civic center but the atmosphere was intensely positive.

asheville people's market yay

our spot, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

went to the asheville people's market today to sell stash jars and so much happened. shared space with lydia who did a collaborative participatory community art project where people mostly kids dropped flowers and snakeskins and pennies and other treasures on an ancient windowpane and she pours clear resin over it and it all floats as if in glass. had lovely visits with l&m in wigs, ashevillein & daughter with spiral walking stick, gritgoods & photobug fred, shadmarsh with a sweet tot, and zenography whose duct tape wallet bought the crown jewel in the stash safe collection - the striped together pb&j laura lynn. i sold a few safes, haggled with a pickled woman, bartered for a bag of fruit salad, good times were had by all & i will go back to this market to sell or to browse on free sundays, it goes until october.

woke up tuesday and my computer had a virus. it was a fake virus scanner box that popped up. i tried to run virus removal from symantec and windows defender and after babysitting the machine for a few hours while it scanned every file i have, i restarted and the virus popped up again. so i took it to charlotte street computers. the nice guy called last night and said the hardware is fine but it's infected and it will be at least $160 and i should have it back by friday if all goes well and there's no way to rush it. i've been going to goodwill gathering vintage taking photos of a mannequin and going to the library to check emails. pretty frightening how i am so tied to having a computer with the internet. i love technology, but not as much as you you see, but i still love technology, always and forever

asheville people's market

this sunday i'll be selling my world famous peanut butter and fluff stash safes at the new market downtown. come say hola.

the press release:

"The Asheville People's Market will be open every Sunday, June through October from 11am to 4pm in the Parking Lot across from Rosetta's Kitchen (Broadway's, Nova, the Emerald Lounge, and TV Eye) at 93 N. Lexington Ave. Parking is available near the Food Lion skate park and under the 240 overpass bridge, and on the street on Lexington Ave.

In the spirit of the markets of the world and the generations, i proudly introduce, The Asheville People's Market. It is a flea-market style place to buy art, crafts, and homemade items from Asheville artists as well as bartering for and haggling over for yard sale items, lost treasures, and other peoples un-loved functionals. It is also the place for spending a social Sunday shopping outside of the typical consumer loop.

So bring the kids, the old folk, a sun hat, a few bucks, and come on down to see what treasure you might dig up and what necessities you can skip at the big box stores! Keep it local, Keep it real!

Vendor spaces will be available for 10$, on a first come first serve basis and are open to arts, crafts, handmades, and personal used yard sale and flea market items. We will judge re-sale vendors and informational tables on a individual basis. For more detailed information, or any questions or comments, please e-mail me at rosettastarshine@gmail.com

Whooo Hoooo, this will be so much fun!
Love, Rosetta Star"

so that will be fun. and my stash jars are trustworthy, i just got this ebay feedback from 2888tunnel - DEALING with YOU is a GREAT FEELING !!!!!!!

i also got this feedback: The shorts had either dog or cat hair all over them-I washed and they were fine. from donnaleighwebb

crumbier cakes

now i'm thinking it's better to have two slightly crumbier cakes than one perfect cake. because who wants a perfect cake anyway? it's the flaws that make it charming.
as my wise indonesian friend diana said:
Usually the different one make people more interested (God is so fair) like you say Nacho have smaller head and lighter weight but God give Nacho more charm that make you easily fall in love to him ^ ^. I feel Nacho charm too like I said I love his sweet look....

and you could give away some of the extra slightly crumbier cake.

crumbier cake

crumbier cake, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

"the more you try to have your cake and eat it too, the crumbier it gets"
pearl baptist church, iron station, north carolina

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Have_one's_cake_and_eat_it_too says:
"The reversal of this expression helped in the identification of the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. In the Unabomber's "Manifesto", it was written and signed "...you can't eat your cake and have it too. To gain one thing you have to sacrifice another." His brother David Kaczynski was able to identify Ted after reading the "Manifesto". Ted and their mother both used the more accurate but older and less popular use of the phrase."

i'm with the unabomber, it makes more sense to me saying "you can't eat your cake and have it too." either way, it's crumby, and i want both.

"let us go"

Somewhere in between Mobile and Montgomery
sittin’ in a gas station
trying to make some money

so we could go on down to the Gulf of Mexico
Let us go, let us go, let us go

Last night I dreamt about the girl that I left behind
If she was drunk I must have been
goin’ deaf and blind

and if I’m in Georgia again, I’ll get her by my side
and we will go, we will go, we will go

Someone’s lookin’ out for me
and he’s playing jokes and he's actin' awful mean
but he cannot stop my wonderin’
He cannot stop my wanderin’

Fixed my eye against the sky, was worried ‘bout tornados
but I spent the night in a trailer park
just a mile up the road

and if I could survive that without a cyclone attack
I would go, I would go, and I would go

I would go, and I would go, and I would go
I would go, and I would go, and I would go
I would go, and I would go, and I would go

christ did a cow shit in here?

here's the opening line to an email i got this week:

Hi Heather!

It's Emily R##s..you know the one that said "Christ did a cow shit in here?" in a nice little play and yes I believe you peed your pants on your parents dining room chair...that was me.

her family of 3 girls around the ages of my brother and me, i was oldest by a couple years, Emily was youngest by a few years, would come visit for a couple weeks in the summer and we would go to their house at bonnet shores in rhode island for a couple weeks in the summer too and we would do plays. the one she's talking about she was maybe 4 or 5 years old and i was about 8th grade and she knocked on the front door in a skit from 'kentucky fried movie' for a fake air freshener commercial, she had white hair like an angel and knocked on the door and said 'christ did a cow shit in here' and it was so funny i peed on the chair.

it was either this year or the following summer.

emily is on the left, the sign says 'politics in review,' my brother has blue eyebrows.

big easy

new orleans was awesome, i had a stellar birthday weekend. the city is way more beautiful and cleaner than i'd imagined. many buildings are from the 1700s and have so much character. jazzfest was super, the food was super, everything was easy.

thousands of words:

the stranger on my right completely hogging my legroom

jama jama (spinach), fried plantains, chicken fricassee, hot sauce from jazzfest fairgrounds

doc watson has workingman's blues

franky & johnny's gumbo = super great

new mastersounds + dj logic = show started @3 AM incredibly high energy funkfest

north carolina's nice too.

different writers, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

my birthday is coming up, and i've gotten some very nice cards in the mail. i am pretty sure my mother thinks my birthday is today, since today was my due date.
i find it amazing that my aunt jojo and my mom have almost identical handwriting. they are both very neat and classically beautiful letter-formers. their other sister writes nothing like this, and neither do/did their parents.
is penmanship nature or nurture?

farmers market

farmers market, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

this weekend has been excellent. other than when there were 5 dogs in the backyard and holden the mad scavenger took the opportunity to sneak off and run away down the street. i walked down yelling his name and a guy came on his stoop and said "black dog?" i said "YES!" he said "eating the compost in back?" i said "YES!"

please take a second and wish my mom luck in her bridge tournament today. she won a big tournament last week, in her own words:

"It was a regional tournament at the Sheraton in Smithtown, We won one of the bracketed (handicappped) knock-out competitions. It was so much fun. Will play again all day Sunday in a Swiss team event."

after the rain of the last couple months, asheville has pulled itself out of its 2 year drought. they're warning the summer will be hot and very dry but i'm hoping they don't know what they're talking about.

either way, it's refreshing to see everything green and flowing.

Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent

yes she makes that audience rock.

"i dreamed a dream" from les miserables

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame.

And still
I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
so different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

it wasn't the most exciting championship game, but the good guys won. frasor makes me nervous, the heels fall on the floor drawing charges too often, and hansbrough may be a robot in a family of robots, but other than that, they were the perfect team. ellington and danny green and and ed davis and ty lawson with his low center of gravity were so much fun to watch all season.

broken toes

broken toes, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

people are funny.

this photo i took of someone's toes in a cast is the second-most clicked-on of all 3000 of my flickr photos by a mile. (the first most clicked-on is this of unc-asheville's giant basketball player kenny george last year).

last week i got email from mike52fun about it:

Leg Cast

Hi,

Was that your foot in the cast? If so, did you enjoy the attention you received while wearing it?

Have a GREAT day,
Mike

to which i replied:

Re: Leg Cast
hi MIke, no it wasn't my foot, i was at an outdoor concert & it was the foot of a woman sitting in front of me. i'm very glad to have never broken my foot or ankle or leg.

then he wrote back:

Re: Leg Cast

Thank-you!

Would you like to wear a cast for fun for a couple of days and see how much attention you would receive?

Have a GREAT Weekend,
Mike

i countered:

Re: Leg Cast
i don't think so, since i do all i can to AVOID attention. i'm more of an observer than a performer. and i like to walk instead of hobble.

and finally:

Re: Leg Cast

Thank-you for your reply!

I wish you much success!

Mike

so i got that going for me.

newark

newark , originally uploaded by skippy haha.

i took this photo sunday morning at newark airport thinking about all the sensory overload presented there, and just noticed the woman in the vest is the very same woman who sneezed on me twice after our flight landed in asheville and we were waiting at the gate to retrieve luggage.

i guess the new thing with sneezing is to NOT contain your germs with your hands, thinking you'll soon touch things with your germy fingers and spread your sick. instead you're supposed to sneeze into your elbow and contain the germs there, since you hardly touch the inside of your elbow to anything or anyone else.

there were about a dozen other passengers tightly clustered at the gate waiting for the bag cart to meet us. she was less than a foot away from me. when she sneezed, she turned her head toward me and sort of raised her bent arm to shoulder level and sneezed, containing none of her germs in her elbow, instead spraying me with them.

i sighed loudly and rolled my eyes and turned my head away and covered my mouth with my scarf to breathe.

within 20 seconds she did it again.

i said, 'are you kidding me?!?' and walked out of the room. she mumbled something like 'oh i'm sorry.'

if you're going to sneeze into your elbow, please put your elbow up to your mouth, not 6 inches in front of your face as you sneeze all over people around you.

i now have swollen glands and blame her.

orange peel update

i got a sincere, thoughtful response from Dana, manager at the orange peel, after my bitching about the recent invasive bag search i encountered there at the ozomatli show:

Hi Heather,

I'm sorry to hear that you had an uncomfortable experience with our door staff at the Ozomatli show. I actually took the night off to attend the show and, you're right, it was great. We really try to encourage the staff to be considerate of both the customer's experience at a show and the security of the club. It is not an easy job and sometimes, in efforts to protect the club, a staff member can go overboard. We have reminded all of the staff that the thoroughness of pat downs/searches, unless otherwise dictated by the band's management, do not need to be quite so extreme and we think we have come up with a policy that is clear and noninvasive.
... I appreciate you emailing us as we are always trying to improve and constructive criticism is always welcome.

Sincerely,
Dana Redfield
The Orange Peel, Manager

i am happy with this response and plan to go back in the next couple months, and will bring my bag like i normally do and report back on the depth of search.

do not mix olives and wings, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

it's been a few months since i changed my brita water filter and there are carbon bits floating around the inside, so i went to ingles to get some more.

i checked the hardware aisle.

no filters.

i checked the bottled water aisle.

no filters.

i checked the baking aisle.

no filters.

i checked the jewish food aisle where i swear i'd bought them before.

no filters.

fine, you win, i'll ask a manager stocking shelves. i knew he was a manager from his white button down shirt and tie. he told me they no longer stock water filters.

he said there wasn't enough room for water filters anymore after the last 'reset.'

this store is huge. tens of thousands of square feet. it has a full pharmacy inside the store. it has a full deli inside the store. it has a freestanding starbucks inside the store. it has a full movie rental store inside the store.

they must've had to make room for this disgusting salad wing and olive bar and could no longer spare 1 square foot of shelf space for brita filters.

hellos and goodbyes

badminton yoga, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

it's now been 2 years since nacho, holden and i moved to asheville from sun diego. i had high expectations and they've been exceeded. it's a most accepting, creative place, aesthetically pleasing, with plenty of opportunity for recreation, full of relatively aware unfake people. i love living here.

yesterday was a goodbye party for friends who are moving to tennessee.
in the words of billy joel:
so many faces in and out of my life,
some will last, some will just be now and then.
life is a series of hellos and goodbyes,
i'm afraid it's time for goodbye again.
