if it's not one thing

i got to the bottom of the swallowed bone mystery.

a couple weeks ago i was pulling out of my driveway when an old man who lives at the end of the street walked by.

he asked me if i liked poke sallit. i said i never had it. he said his old lady keeps asking him about the poke patch in my yard, and if i planned to eat any of it. i said no thanks, i had no idea, he's free to pick whatever he wants out of it.

i saw him last night & he told me as a thank you he's been leaving bones for my dogs.

i showed him the 20 staples on holden's stomach & he started to cry.

he said he left some chicken wings and a pig's neck yesterday morning. they were gone from where he left them and nacho must've eaten them when i let him out.

nacho threw up last night at 2 am. and again at 5 am. i haven't slept since 2, i've been staring at him waiting for him to throw up or his stomach to bloat up.

i called the vet the minute they opened and told the story & said i'd like to get him xrayed to see if there are bones stuck in him and got an appt. for 1pm

since then he's seemed fine, i fed him a little at 8 & just walked him around the block & hasn't thrown up again and he seems ok.

it is probably crazy of me to take him for xrays. but jesus christ.

googling tells me poke salad is a southern delicacy similar to collard greens, but is actually toxic to humans and should not be made or eaten.

nacho is gonna be fine, the x-rays showed the bones are passing through his system, he has gastroenteritis & he's on prilosec and semi-liquid diet for a couple days.

holden my loyal little friend turns a ripe old 10 today. this is from his ride home after being plucked from the breeder's bargain bin.

i just got back from the vet, where i left holden. he is right now in surgery to remove a rib from his intestines. i didn't feed him any ribs, i guess he got it somehow in the neighbor's yard where he was playing wednesday. he threw up twice yesterday and i wasn't too worried, then threw up again today & i took him in to the vet.

he might be able to come home tomorrow or he might have to stay the whole weekend at the emergency vet.

we're talking thousands of dollars. and one sick, sick puppy.

i was supposed to go tubing down the green river tomorrow with a bunch of people, not any more.

i hope he's okay. my little buddy.

***UPDATE***Friday 8PM

just talked to the vet, holden made it through surgery, the bone was in his upper small intestine, caught in the spot where he had surgery back when he was 2 & ate a pair of my roommate's tights. it was just about to perforate, another day and he would've been a goner. she said they saved the bone for me. he's doped up on pain killers resting overnight and she'll call first thing in the morning to let me know how he's doing. but so far so good.

well i went back to the dermatologist this morning, and he was not concerned in the least about the spot on my shoulder, he said it was not basal cell tumor or cancerous and it's just a skin growth and he shot it with liquid nitrogen for 30 seconds or so and sent me home. said stay out of the sun and come back in a couple years.
it's really hard for me to trust doctors. but he was very confident. but i still don't fully believe him.

insect update

i have moved away from a black widow's nest to a new house that i found holds a couple little black widows of its own, but nothing like the last spider's den.

the newest form of wildlife to plague my existence however is the amazing jumping spider, also known as the camel cricket or the cave cricket. it looks like a nice big thick bodied and legged spider but it JUMPS. 2 feet in the air from a standstill. i have killed three in my bathroom this week. i killed two with a flyswatter and i made nacho kill one. from a sound sleep in another room he rushed to my aid hearing "nacho! nacho! get him! get him nacho! he's jumping! right there! nacho get him! jumping!" and the friendly polar bear cub batted at the cave cricket with his paw and off came a couple cave cricket legs and nacho looked at me like 'this is not food' and that was pretty much the end. i realize the wallpaper looks like a butterfly bamboo forest but it is not acceptable place for jumping insects to live.

DITLOA reception

there was a reception tonight for the DITLOA (day in the life of asheville) photo project from april.

the pack library downtown hung the shots in their glass hallway windows, and tonight the photographers brought snacks and family and mingled and looked at the photos.

i picked 'family walk' to be printed, and one of the judges picked 'clothesline' to be printed also, so i have two hanging up there.

i am proud of myself for going to the reception. i went by myself and i didn't know (in real life) anybody who was going , though i avidly read some of their websites and might be 'contacts' on flickr. there was no liquor, during daylight hours, could be kind of intense in a room full of 60 people all with cameras, as one who greatly avoids being photographed. so it was kind of a scary uncomfortable thing that afterwards i am very glad i did. it was excellent and kind of surreal to see these creative talented people in 3-D.

basal cell incompetence

i'm pretty sure i have a basal cell tumor on my shoulder. i finally did esearch on it & matched pictures and have myself 98% convinced. this is upsetting because i went to have moles checked out by a licensed dermatologist in april. i didn't point this one out specifically but he did look at it among all the others and said fine. but he didn't feel it and he must not have really looked at it because it's a basal cell tumor. i should have told him this one felt different & if you'll notice is not flat and brown like the others, i will spare photos of it because honestly it makes my insides twist in sickly green to think about it. i'm going to call the crap dermatologist tomorrow & get it taken off asap.
