sunkist ad 1981

this commercial is absolutely seared into my memory from watching it when i was 5. when i came across a vintage sunkist t-shirt today with the same brand logo, i remembered the hands peeling the spouting oranges and the dripping orange at the end so vividly but thought it could've been an ad for something else. so thankful youtube had it. watch grandma mash an orange into her face -

ees no block weedow

after killing a spider behind the dryer last month, i looked at all the windows and corners of the house and found a couple more webs and spiders i thought could be black widows. i called my landlords and they had their friend who has a terminix business come over to look and spray. i showed him and the landlord the webs and the dead spider behind the dryer and the exterminator who is from brazil said "Ees no block weedow." i said "are you sure? it had a red spot on it?" he just shook his head chuckling & said "Ees no block weedow. You know block weedow? Ees big. Ees no block weedow" like i am a nutty broad. he said the spiders and webs i showed him are not poisonous spiders but he went around spraying all the corners with some horrible chemicals anyway just so i wouldn't worry & pronounced me spider free.

well i'm worried. the dryer needs real attention so i finally went down with tweezers & a plastic bag & put the spider carcass in there so i could look at it. how could an exterminator laugh me off that this is a black widow? it shrunk from being sprayed with bleach, but isn't this a red spot?

and still in the same window that i originally showed him is this lovely animal. is this not a black widow? am i a nutty broad? help me out here guy.

voting controversy from the vintage vantage site

it's been 4 years since this all happened. this is right from the vv site:

It all started with Kat Storemski. The outspoken 21-year-old from Florida complained to MTV that our voting t-shirt was giving young people the wrong idea about voting. MTV News ran the story, and what followed can only be described as a media explosion. We were soon fielding early morning calls from the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR - everybody wanted to know why we hated democracy so much.

Even Russell Simmons was talking poop. Then Harvard University chimed in and our shirts were banned from stores across the country.

Uhh, what?

Our favorite part was when Fox News came to our house to cover the story - while we didn't answer the door, we did let Holden and Nacho (dressed in voting t-shirts) out to play with our new friends. They got along great! Look, they're kissing!

When the dust cleared, we collected some of our favorite quotes on the subject - click here to check em out.

Our vicious attempt to poison the minds of young people.
But the story doesn't end there! With election day fast approaching, we posted an offer on this website - free voting t-shirts for anybody who promised to wear the shirt to the polls. The response was overwhelming, as the Camp Cool faithful proved once and for all that young people can appreciate irony and participate in the political process at the same time. Click below to see photos from the polls.

go out & vote this year, old people

these sticks are uncrossed

there was a camp game called 'these sticks are crossed, these sticks are UNcrossed' where everybody sat in a circle on the floor and passed around two sticks (like from trees. the littlest branches.) and as each person passed them she said either "these sticks are crossed" or "these sticks are uncrossed" and the trick was it had nothing to do with whether she was crossing the sticks in her hands - it was whether her legs were crossed or not. so if she was indian style but holding the sticks parallel she had to say 'these sticks are crossed' or else everybody who 'got it' already would say 'NOOOooo!!' and she passed them to the next person.

i am very comfortable sitting down completely twisted up, my legs crossed once or sometimes twice, and i know this is not good for my circulation or joints or muscles or probably every system i have. it's probably like when a hose is bent and gets a kink. in the past i've tried nailing slippers to the floor so i could put my feet in them and they would stay straight, but the slippers were too easy to slide out of and unconsciously i would be crossed within minutes. i was considering snowboard bindings under the desk or a chair like teylor in the pumpkin patch.
