As I reflect on the enormous effort mountain firefighters expended in the last 2 days to make sure no people, animals, and houses burned down during the Elephant Butte Wildfire in Evergreen, I am thankful and proud and happy. 

 






I watched neighbors on the news who went down to the lake to "cheer the firefighters on and say go team!" There was zero political polarization in local online groups - people were opening their houses and stables to displaced families and animals and sharing information kindly. 

Nobody said "how are we going to pay for this? Who is paying for this?" We were all scared and put our trust in our government to take care of the danger, and they did. It was glorious.

Imagine feeling this way about our education system and our healthcare system. Imagine feeling that our taxes were going to make sure every kid hit their potential, that every neighbor was able to see a doctor when they're sick.

It could be beautiful.

Evergreen BLM Rally

 

Evergreen, CO, population 9000, 97% white, had a Black Lives Matter protest today. Over 300 people showed up, babies to seniors, wearing masks and carrying signs, to show solidarity and listen to two black speakers - 12 year old Felix, Ethiopian, and the only black kid in his Evergreen Middle School class - spoke with courage and humor and honesty. Very inspiring.

 

Then Chris Burroughs the biracial drag queen genius organizer actor, read out the names of black Americans killed by the police for 8:46 for George Floyd. He spoke truth to power about the discrimination he faced growing up here and advocated for real change aka #defundthepolice and finally put it back on us - it's up to we white people to do the work. One day he will be more famous than Trey Parker.

 

There's a community he(art) installation at the Center for the Arts where people can write names to honor and other messages of solidarity on hearts and stick them to the wall.

Last but not least, and this is not a real WTF, I'm overjoyed to report that after a 6 year semi-hiatus,Tea Leaf Green is recording a new album! We saw them twice over Memorial Day weekend here in Colorado and they brought the fuego. Ellohay, Volvo SUV going 55mph in a 25 yesterday afternoon, that took a turn too wide too fast and knocked over one of our pine trees, crashed into another! (Uninsured kid driving climbed out passenger door completely fine, thank dog).

WTF Wednesday: Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, Weasel Plate

We found a crazy TV show - "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo" - set in Queensland in the early 90s. Skippy is a female kangaroo family pet like Lassie, but even smarter. You can tell Skippy to go get help from a particular person, and Skippy will hop into a restaurant and find that person ("Skippy & The Golfer" episode). It's a great show full of sweet vintage fashion and I encourage everyone to check it out.

It's been a while since I posted here, for a couple reasons - 

          1. My friend Supermama Vintage alerted me to a Facebook group dedicated to thrift store WTFery and I felt the public's need for thrift store WTFery was/is being met by this group - Weird Second Hand Finds that Need to Be Shared

          2. On the advice of my 11 year old whippersnapper intern niece, I started a vintage Instagram and have been posting pretty regularly over there. Skippyhaha Vintage Instagram.

We went to a rally for Jared Polis and Joe Neguse in Boulder today and Bernie hugged me!

 

We got there early and made it to the front row. I was wearing my Bernie onesie jumpsuit and he laughed and said "I guess we gotta hug" and then BERNIE HUGGED ME.
