keep dancing

a t-shirt from a 1984 zeta beta tau dance marathon in philly led me to this juicy account of the 19 day dance marathon at the seattle armory that led to the ban on dance marathons in seattle:

"The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that two nurses would be on duty night and day "in constant watch over the dancers" and that doctors would examine the dancers "frequently." Besides this William Raths, director of a Bellingham physical culture school, would "direct a corps of trainers and rubbers” (Seattle P-I, July 21, 1928)."
...

"By August 11, it was over. The couple that finished first won $1000 prize money. On August 22, 1928, however, the Armory marathon was on page one again. Gladys Lenz, the dancer whose partner had punched her when he went "squirrelly," had attempted suicide."

all this and so much more, including contestants demanding new phonograph records, hysterical giggling, and an Oriental Garden in a crenelated fortress can be found here:

HistoryLink.org - The Online Encyclopedia of Washington State History - Essay - "Dance Marathon closes in Seattle after 19 days on August 11, 1928."

once was lost but now i'm found

a few amazingly recovered shots from last night are here

so high so low

i had a ladies only modelfest here tonight and it was glorious, and then it was terrible, and now it is glorious again. after about 100 photos the nikon d70 camera started showing CHA and FOR instead of the number count, and i ejected and re-inserted the memory card and the battery between every photo and it was not really working and when i tried to view all them on the computer, the files turned into folders with nothing in them and the letters looked like they were written with wingdings. it looked like all was lost. hours of irreplaceable one-of-a-kind inspired beautiful hard work gone poof like that.

but then i went to cardrecovery.com and downloaded their software and they got my photos back! it's a middlemay miracle!

i'm not sure if it's something wrong with the memory card (sandisk ultra II, 1 month old) or with the camera.

yes, i love technology, but not as much as you, you see... but I STILL love technology... always and forever.

now it's past 5am, the roof of my mouth has been chopped by kettlecorn, ive gotten all the chocolate bits out of the trailmix, there are helmets and sombreros on my bed i think it's time to sleep.

sprung modelfesting

today is the first day of spring, though you can't tell by the 36 degree temperature right now.

it is also the day of modelfest, where kindly people come over, take their shirts off, put on shirts that other people have thrown away, have their photo taken, and do it again.

it is always a good time, and always a lot of work.

here are a couple gems of the past:

in the next few weeks, these shirts will find their way to the top shelf or eBay. some of them are unconscionably expensive, but the code 'skippyhaha' gets 40% off, and they really are the coolest shirts of all time.

voting controversy from the vintage vantage site

it's been 4 years since this all happened. this is right from the vv site:

It all started with Kat Storemski. The outspoken 21-year-old from Florida complained to MTV that our voting t-shirt was giving young people the wrong idea about voting. MTV News ran the story, and what followed can only be described as a media explosion. We were soon fielding early morning calls from the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR - everybody wanted to know why we hated democracy so much.

Even Russell Simmons was talking poop. Then Harvard University chimed in and our shirts were banned from stores across the country.

Uhh, what?

Our favorite part was when Fox News came to our house to cover the story - while we didn't answer the door, we did let Holden and Nacho (dressed in voting t-shirts) out to play with our new friends. They got along great! Look, they're kissing!

When the dust cleared, we collected some of our favorite quotes on the subject - click here to check em out.

Our vicious attempt to poison the minds of young people.
But the story doesn't end there! With election day fast approaching, we posted an offer on this website - free voting t-shirts for anybody who promised to wear the shirt to the polls. The response was overwhelming, as the Camp Cool faithful proved once and for all that young people can appreciate irony and participate in the political process at the same time. Click below to see photos from the polls.

it's a husky world

the la times says disney is fixing the ride "it's a small world" so the boats stop getting stuck in a couple places. they're making the water deeper and the boats more buoyant. when boats stick on the ride now, a disney worker goes back there and asks somebody to get out of the boat & gives them a food ticket for their trouble.

here is a shirt they could give out instead

in related news, a dunkin donuts just opened nearby, with plans for more to spread into the area soon.

be careful

mosquito masks, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

there's drought and wind and fire out in california (see the map) just a few miles from where i lived and where all the vintage vantage t-shirts are warehoused, and it's a terrible mess for thousands of people out there. all the kitshickers are safe and breathing in horrible smoke and ash. pray for the winds to die. in extreme cases, wear mosquito masks. in the words of jerry springer, take care of yourselves...and each other.
