squished copperhead

squished copperhead, originally uploaded by skippy haha.

this is the second copperhead snake i've seen in the past 2 days. the first one was alive and twice as big and sunning itself on a tiny (two feet by three feet) sand beach at the lake. we all jumped down on the sand to see the sunset & i turned around i saw it sitting there with its head up moving around & gasped like in cartoons and said "i really think that is a copperhead and we should get out of here as soon as possible" while trying to climb a tree trunk and digging my fingernails into the skin of my own arm and the arm of my companion who amazingly managed to get the dog turned around and out of there by jumping back up over the copperhead back to the trail where we followed without any of us being bitten.

Frightening Story. Great job avoiding being bit and preventing the dog from inciting the snake. Do you think the dog saw it? Quick thinking. Which dog was it? Good going to all of you. As far as the picture on the road goes... could be a Jackson Pollock?

the dog was eli, he didn't seem to see the snake even though he jumped over it twice. you should see the large version of the dead snake, with the flies up close. good stuff.

i grew up in the country in good old okie homa. we had a creek behind at the back of our three acres. my neighbors and i would fish back there all of the time. we liked to fish with crawdad tails. we would gather our bait by wading through the shallow part of the creek and lifting up rocks. needless to say, i scurried up my fair share of creek banks trying to escape from copperheads. i also ran over many with the tractor.

it might have been water moccasins under the rocks. heck, i can't remember. we had to deal with a lot of snakes. i still have dreams that i'm saving my sister from snakes. no need to psycho analyze me...i truly think it just stems from all the snake encounters during my childhood.

kid d, scurrying up a creek bank was exactly what happened. that is sick about the tractor!
